Sulfadoxine and Pyrimethamine are often prescribed together to treat malaria. This medication is used after a person contracts malaria via mosquito bites in countries where this disease is prevalent. The medication kills malaria parasites found inside red blood cells of infected people.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication should not be used as a preventative measure against malaria because patients are more likely to suffer serious negative side effects if they are not currently suffering from malaria when they take the medication.
Patients should contact a doctor immediately if they develop a rash while on this medication. Rashes are often the first symptom of a serious and sometimes fatal allergic reaction to the medication.
If you are prescribed this medication, take it exactly as prescribed; changing the dose in any way can reduce its effectiveness. Avoid exposure to mosquitoes while on this medication to minimize the risk of re-infection.
