Quetiapine is an anti-psychotic medication that is often prescribed to patients who suffer from schizophrenia. This medication changes chemical activity in the brain in order to prevent hallucinations, delusions and disorganized thinking. It is also used to help control symptoms of mania in bipolar people and can sometimes be used to help combat depression.
Warnings/Side Effects
Older adults who suffer from age-related dementia should not take this medication. Elderly people who take anti-psychotic medication because of dementia increase their risk of dying of a heart attack or bout of pneumonia.
This medication can also cause people to become suicidal. Young people–those who are 24 or younger–are at the greatest risk of suicidal thoughts and self-harming behavior, but anyone who is on this medication should be monitored closely for signs of suicidal ideation.
