Ofloxacin is an antibiotic drug that is prescribed for serious infections of the skin, bladder, uterus, prostate and reproductive organs. It is also prescribed to treat bacterial infections of the respiratory system such as pneumonia or bronchitis. This medication works by killing the bacteria that are responsible for infection and illness.
Side Effects/Warnings
Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic; this type of antibiotic sometimes causes tendon problems. Patients who take the medication for an extended period of time, especially those who are over the age of 60, may have painful swelling of the tendons connecting muscles and bones, making it difficult to move. If left untreated, this inflammation of the tendons can cause a tendon rupture requiring corrective surgery.
This medication should only be given to treat bacterial infections that do not respond to less strong medication. If it is taken unnecessarily, bacteria may develop resistance to it, making it harder to treat infections.
