Nortriptyline is a medication that helps clinically depressed patients. This medication adjusts brain chemicals in order to promote mental health and balance and to eliminate feelings of depression, worthlessness, guilt, anger and sadness. It is often prescribed to patients who suffer from chronic depression, especially those whose quality of life is significantly impacted and those who are suicidal.
Side Effects/Warnings
Patients who take this medication should be monitored closely for suicidal thoughts and feelings. Some patients become more depressed rather than less while on this medication and may attempt to harm themselves. Patients who are younger than 24 have the greatest risk of this side effect.
This medication causes physical dependence if used for a long period of time. Patients should not suddenly stop using the medication, as withdrawal symptoms include seizures and high blood pressure in addition to more severe forms of the depression the medication was prescribed for.
