Nefazodone is prescribed to psychiatric patients who suffer from chronic or debilitating depression, a condition in which they are lethargic and have feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, guilt, sadness and anger. This medication helps adjust the brain chemistry of these patients so that they feel more balanced and peaceful and experience less negative emotional states.
Side Effects/Warnings
Some patients experience mood swings, worse depression and suicidal feelings while on this medication. This can cause them to act in self-harming manners. Children, adolescents and young adults are at greater risk of suicide while on this medication than the general population, but all patients taking this medication should be monitored for suicidal tendencies, especially during the first few weeks of medication.
Nefazodone can also cause liver damage. Patients with liver disease should avoid taking this medication. All patients should call their doctors right away if they have severe stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, brown urine or jaundice.
