Morphine is a narcotic drug that is used to control pain in patients who require round-the-clock pain management such as patients with certain types of advanced cancer. This medication is injected into a large muscle or infused continuously into a vein via an IV drip. It numbs pain by blocking nerve impulses to the brain that carry pain messages.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication can cause a toxic reaction in some individuals in which they feel dizzy and may faint. These patients may also have a hard time breathing when morphine is introduced into their systems. If they begin to have an adverse reaction, doctors can provide an antidote to morphine; thus, patients should stay in the hospital under continuous monitoring for the first 24 hours after receiving their first dose of morphine.
