Methadone is a synthetic form of heroin that is often used as part of a treatment program for heroin addiction. Patients take the drug once a day in order to minimize heroin withdrawal symptoms.
Side Effects/Warnings
Methadone should not be used by itself to treat heroin addiction. Methadone use should be one part of a treatment program that includes psychotherapy, support group attendance and treatment of underlying physical and mental health issues.
Methadone use can cause cardiac arrest or respiratory dysfunction, especially if used in combination with other drugs. Patients who use methadone must avoid all illegal drugs and must exercise caution when using prescription medications. Check with your doctor before taking any medication, as interactions may be fatal.
