Lamotrigine is used along with several other medications to help control seizures in epileptic patients. This medication comes in an extended-release tablet form as well as a regular tablet form. Regular tablets can also be used to help increase the time between mood swings in people who have Type I bipolar disorder. The medication works by decreasing the amount of electrical activity in the brain.
Warnings/Side Effects
This medication can cause serious rashes, some of which may be signs of a fatal toxicity. Patients should get emergency medical attention if they develop rashes while on this medication. In some cases, the medication will have to be discontinued. Children younger than 16 are more likely to develop serious rashes than adults. Rashes most frequently occur during the first six weeks of treatment but can occur at any time during treatment.
