Iloperidone is an atypical anti-psychotic medication. This medication changes the chemical composition of the brain in order to eliminate symptoms of schizophrenia such as delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking and intense or inappropriate emotional responses.
Side Effects/Warnings
Patients who suffer from age-related psychotic dementia should not take this medication. Studies show that elderly people who take anti-psychotic medication are more likely to die of a heart attack, stroke or bout of pneumonia than patients who do not take this medication.
It can be dangerous to abruptly withdraw from this medication. Patients who want to stop taking the medication should taper off it gradually. Withdrawal can cause heart attacks, seizures and strokes in addition to a return of schizophrenic symptoms and behavior.
