Icodextrin

Patients on dialysis might be given icodextrin as part of their treatment. This medication simulates kidney function; it removes waste and fluids from your bloodstream so that they can be eliminated via urination.

Side Effects/Warnings

Patients should only use glucose specific monitors to check their blood sugar levels while they are on this medication. If they or their doctors use other types of blood sugar monitoring devices, they may get a falsely high reading. This can cause doctors to give or withhold insulin treatment. As a result, blood sugar may become abnormally high or low, which can lead to complications including coma or death.
