Heparinoids may be prescribed to help reduce the risk of a blood clot or to break up blood clots that have already formed in the legs, lungs or heart. Blood clots increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. These medications work by thinning the blood in order to break up clots and stop new ones from forming.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication interacts negatively with spinal anesthesia or spinal punctures. If a patient is getting spinal work done, he or she should avoid this medication. Taking it while undergoing spinal therapy can cause spinal hematomas–pooling of blood in the spine that can cause long-term or permanent paralysis. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience weakness, numbness, tingling or difficulty moving your legs.
