Fosphenytoin sodium is used to control epileptic seizures during brain surgery and while in the hospital. This medication is used only for short-term control of seizures; long-term control is achieved by combining it with another anti-seizure medication.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication should be administered slowly in order to reduce the risk of low blood pressure or cardiac arrhythmias. If it is infused too quickly, the patient may have complications or die during surgery. This medication can continue to cause complications after the patient is out of surgery.
Fosphenytoin Sodium can also cause allergic reactions in some people. This medication should be discontinued if patients develop difficulty breathing, swelling in the face or tongue, or hives and rashes.
