Fluphenazine is an anti-psychotic medication. This medication is prescribed to people with schizophrenia and other mental disorders that cause them to hallucinate or suffer from delusions. The medication changes the chemical makeup of the brain to stop these problems from occurring.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication should not be used to treat psychotic dementia in elderly people. Elderly people who take this drug are more likely to die of a heart attack or of pneumonia than patients who do not take this drug.
Patients may develop physical addiction to this drug. Abrupt withdrawal from the drug can cause seizures, high blood pressure and mood swings along with a return of psychotic symptoms. When stopping use of this drug or switching to another antipsychotic medication, patients should gradually reduce the amount they are taking rather than stopping use of the drug all at once.
