Enoxaparin is often prescribed to patients who are on bedrest prior to or following hip replacement surgery. This medication helps reduce the risk that blood clots will form in the legs while the patient is unable to get out of bed. This medication can also be used to help dissolve blood clots that have already formed in the legs.
Side Effects/Warnings
Patients who are undergoing spinal therapy procedures such as spinal puncture or spinal anesthesia should avoid this medication. Blood thinners such as Enoxaparin interact poorly with spinal treatments; taking this drug while undergoing spinal treatments can cause blood to pool up in the spine, which leads to long-term or permanent paralysis.
